My mom is on social security disability for a # of psychiatric diagnoses. I know her lawyer told her in the beginning that if her disability was due to drug and alcohol then she wouldn’t qualify. When determining her disability she did not have a problem. She never had a problem. Now she does and I want her to go to rehab for her alcohol dependence. Can she risk losing her benefits if she goes in?

Every expert on alcohol treatment maintains that the aftercare that follows the detox treatment is more important than the actual detoxification process itself. This point of view is very staunchly held by the alcohol treatment program in Hawaii. When a person is detoxified, it is only the body of the person that is cleansed. What is actually done is that the accumulated toxins are removed. These toxins could have gathered over the years of their alcohol abuse. It becomes very important to remove these toxins without which the person will not be able to overcome the pangs for the substance and will always carry the risk of some or the other health complication.

Necessary though the detoxification process is, the aftercare is much more important. This is the part of the treatment where the person’s mind is conditioned in a way so as to work out the temptation for the substance. The person is taught various methods that can help keep the cravings away. This is what actually brings the person to a more sustainable method of addiction treatment. While the detox treatment can cleanse the body of the person, it is the aftercare that actually teaches the person how to completely stay away from the substance.
