Article by Lena Butler

In its presentation of America’s Drug Abuse Profile, the National Criminal Justice Reference Service or NCJRS (administered by the US Department of Justice’s Office of Justice Programs) found out that of the 12.8 million US residents with substance abuse cases, nearly 6% represent those coming from the age brackets 12 years old and above. This is around 768,000 teenagers who may have lost their chances of going to school.According to the NCJRS, this number is not as alarming as the 25 million residents who were once drawn into the temptation of substance abuse. But then again, there is no reason for families to ignore these incidents. If you are a parent of a person seeking drug abuse treatment or alcohol abuse treatment, you may be concerned about your child’s schooling. Is there reason enough to make them stop from going to school? Or should you encourage them to continue with their educational path no matter what it takes? Is it possible to do substance abuse treatment and schooling simultaneously?Well, yes it is possible. In fact, in an article entitled “Adolescent Substance Abuse and School Policy” written by Jonathan Eger for the NYU Child Study Center, the author noted what Director Jeanette Friedman had discussed when it comes to adolescent drug and alcohol use. The Director for Impact Program at Phoenix House reiterated that teachers do play an important role as that of the parents of illegal substance users. In fact, teachers have that role to play from the time of drug prevention until the time that substance abuse treatment may be needed.Samples of schools that can provide both substance abuse treatment and ongoing educationSome of these schools are collectively known as therapeutic boarding schools or residential boarding schools. They offer emotional growth programs and are accredited schools as well. These are ideal especially for substance abuse treatment seekers who are struggling emotionally. These are also governed by some rules and policies that the students should follow. Interpersonal skills, problem solving and decision making are being taught to patients.Another type of school that can be used for simultaneous substance abuse treatment and educational growth is the residential treatment school. This offers a small academic program. It works with an outdoor therapy that builds social skills as well as teaches your child to be independent-minded in several instances.Schooling and substance abuse treatment can be possibly done simultaneously. There is a list of accredited schools to help you with the process. You can check via the National Youth Network or agencies such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse for more information.
