Article by Diana Cohen

Unfortunately, the war or drugs isn’t totally effective. Countless people are still succumbing to addiction everyday. Often friends and family members have to deal with their loved ones who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. They have to see them wasting away everyday.

Addiction to alcoholism and drugs is not limited to rich and famous celebrities. It affects average, everyday families, as well. For them, however, they don’t have the luxury of expensive, spa-style rehab facilities. It is their family and friends who have to deal with watching the addict self-destruct. Often families and friends want to know how to encourage someone into drug rehab. Fortunately, today we now can address addictions without the stigma attached to going to rehab.

Do you suspect that your partner, friend or family member may have a drinking addiction despite their claims they are just relaxing after work or unwinding? Some people are able to have a beer or two a few times a week after work without being addicted. The key is how does someone do if they can’t have a drink. How irritable do they get. Are they unable to handle stress? Do they go to great lengths to be sure they can get the beer or alcholic beverage and assure it is available?

Are you noticing that the person has a dependency on the drink or requires alcohol to enjoy himself and deal with life? You may not see any impact in early stages for someone with a drinking addiction on their work performance, speech or social interactions. Most people think of a drinker as someoneo who slurs their words, stumbles and can’t go to work. This isn’t true. There are many “functioning alcoholics” that are addicted.

Alcohol Addiction – What is alcoholism?
Alcohol addiction is simply defined as a compulsive need for an intoxicating liquid that is obtained from fermented grain or fruit. These liquids include beer, wine, and other hard liquors.

Alcoholism is present when a person craves alcohol and cannot limit or contain his or her drinking. If someone experiences withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, or anxiety when alcohol consumption has ceased, or if there is a need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to feel a high, that person is most likely alcoholic.

My boyfriend and I have decided that our relationship needed a fresh start because a lot of bad things have happened while we were together, most of which can be attributed to him being a drinker. I thought it was just because we were in college and everyone was drinking, but it just continued to bad degrees, usually ending with him getting himself into some kind of trouble.
One of the requirements for this new start is that he stops drinking. I’ve researched alcohol withdrawal a little, but I wanted to see if anyone out there had been through this kind of thing, i.e. helping someone with withdrawal.
What can I expect? I know he’ll be irritable, but is are there other things I should a.) look out for or b.) can do to help?

what adive would you give to someone who deals with visual triggers to use alcohol or drugs. for example, one of my clients lives in an area where when he walks down the street he sees people on patio bars and this triggers him. MOVING IS NOT AN OPTION – this is where the treatment facility is located. traveling a different route is not an option for the most part. what are some effective coping skills he may utilize?
please no more ridiculous responses.

Can someone suggest some tunes?

My ex-best friend is getting married. We’ve known each other for twenty-two years now. We were inseparable for twelve. We grew up together like sisters. Then our families moved away. But we both moved back in high school & once again we were like sisters. We’ve been there for each other through high school drama, suicidal times, countless failed relationships, alcoholism, chain-smoking, anorexia, family drama so intense it warrants police intervention, southern baptists chastising our lives, pregnancy scares, moves away to college/to live with bfs/back in with parents, etc…etc…etc… It just got so hard. We both changed so very much. We check in about twice a year. See how things are. We still love each other, but too much has happened. We’ll never be the people we once were & the people we are now wouldn’t be friends. The past is past. No regrets. Anyway, she called last night to tell me she’s engaged. We’ve been planning our weddings since we were little girls. We were to be each other’s maid’s of honor. But that was a long time ago. She’s asked me to be a bridesmaid & I’ve accepted. It may not be like we always dreamed it, but I’ll be damned if, for her sake, it’s not close. Anyway, I’m kinda coping, dealing, etc… I feel very honored that she’s asked me to be a part of it. I’m really happy for her. I’m just sad that it won’t be the way we dreamed it. I’m sad that everything’s changing. Plus, several of my girlfriends have gotten engaged lately & I gotta admit, it leaves me feeling pretty lonely. Need some tunes to help me sort things out. Just need to make a great mix cd to drive around & smoke to. Something to clear my head. Songs about old friends, change, loneliness, no regrets, lying, moving on, etc… Please help. Anything ya got, just throw it at me! Thanks bunches :)
